Ten people killed in road mishaps in six districts

Ten people were killed and 15 others injured in separate road accidents in six districts- Khulna, Joypurhat, Dinajpur, Bhola, Noakhali and Brahmanbaria, in two days.

KHULNA: Two people were killed and three others injured in a road accident in front of the Palli Bidyut Office under Harintana Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased were easy-bike driver Sheikh Didarul Haque, 30, son of Sheikh Obaidul Haque of Sheikhpara in Sanatankathi Village under Haridhali Union, and passenger Tapas Hor alias Sunu Hor, 60, son of Binodhor Hor of Baraipara area in Paikgachha Upazila.

Police and local sources said a Satkhira-bound pickup van carrying soya bean oil collided head-on with an easy-bike coming from the opposite direction, leaving Didarul Haque and Tapas Hor dead on the spot. Locals rescued the injured and rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Harintana Police Station (PS) Md Helal Uddin said police seized the two vehicles but the driver and the helper of the pickup fled the scene. The bodies were recovered and sent to the morgue for autopsies, the OC added.

JOYPURHAT: Three people were killed and at least seven people injured in separate road accidents in Joypurhat Sadar and Akkelpur upazilas on Tuesday afternoon.

Auto-rickshaw driver Touhid Hossain, 35, of Panchbibi Upazila was killed in a collision between a truck and an auto rickshaw at the Bankhun WAPDA Bridge intersection on the Joypurhat-Panchbibi road. The other deceased, an unidentified woman, is said to be from Birnagar Village in the same upazila.

Three of the injured have been identified. They are Shefali, Basanti and Keshomani from Birnagar Village. Fire service personnel rescued the injured and admitted them to the Joypurhat 250-bed General Hospital.

Joypurhat Sadar PS OC Noor Alam Siddiqui said that upon receiving the information, police and fire service personnel quickly went to the spot and rescued the dead and injured and sent them to Joypurhat Modern District Hospital. He also said that legal proceedings are underway in this connection.

On the other hand, three motorcyclists were seriously injured after they collided with a tree in the Pathandhara area of Akkelpur Upazila. After the locals took the seriously injured three to Akkelpur Upazila Hospital, a person named Sajjad Hossain, 45, died. 

Accusing the motorcyclist riding while intoxicated, Akkelpur PS OC Md Shahin Reza said the body has been sent to the district hospital for an autopsy.

DINAJPUR: A mother and son were killed and another was injured when a pickup truck hit the motorcycle carrying them on the Dinajpur-Thakurgaon highway at Panchpir intersection in Birganj Upazila of the district early Tuesday.

The deceased were Faima Akhter, 28, wife of Md Nazmul Islam of Malgram in Kaharol Upazila of Dinajpur, and their son Md Abdullah, 3. The injured Md Nazmul Islam is undergoing treatment at the Birganj Upazila Health Complex.

Quoting locals, the police said that on their way to Uttar Gareya under Thakurgaon Sadar Upazila on a motorcycle, the victims were hit by a fish-laden pickup truck at Panchpir intersection in Birganj, leaving the mother and son dead on the spot and Md Nazmul Islam seriously injured.

Birganj PS OC Md Saiful Islam said that the body will be handed over to the family after legal proceedings.

BHOLA: A Nasimon driver was killed after his vehicle overturned on the Bhola-Char Fasson regional road in the Kunjer Haat Battala area of Borhanuddin Upazila of the district on Monday afternoon.
The deceased Md Sajib, 24, was the son of Ismail Hawlader, a resident of Padma Mansa Ward No. 8 of Kachia Union in the upazila.

Locals said that Sajib was going from Borhanuddin to Daori Bazar with Nasimon. When he reached in front of the Kunjer Haat Battala Mosque, he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn and killing him on the spot. On information, the police recovered the body and took it to the police station.

Borhanuddin PS OC Md Moniruzzaman said that an unnatural death case is under process in this incident.

NOAKHALI: An Alim examinee was killed and four others were injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and a covered van on the Chowmuhani-Laxmipur regional highway in the Amin Bazar area of Begumganj Upazila of the district on Monday afternoon.

The deceased Main Uddin, 21, was the son of Abdul Awal of Latifpur Village in Chandraganj Upazila of Laxmipur District and an Alim examinee of Chandraganj Karamatia Kamil Madrasa.

It is known that after the accident, four examinees, including the CNG driver, were seriously injured. Locals took them to Noakhali 250-bed General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Main Uddin dead. When news of the accident spread, angry mob blocked the Laxmipur-Chowrasta road for about two hours. 

Chandraganj Highway PS OC Md Zakir Rabbani confirmed the incident.

BRAHMANBARIA: A woman died after being hit by a covered van on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Ashuganj Gol Chattar Mor in Ashuganj Upazila of the district on Monday morning.

The deceased Tanzina Akhter, 32, was a resident of Kotbari area in Cumilla Sadar Upazila and wife of Amjad Hussain, executive engineer of Ashuganj Power Station Company Limited.

According to the police, a Dhaka-bound covered van hit the motorcycle carrying the deceased and Amjad Hussain in the said area. In this, Tanzina Akhter fell down on the road and was seriously injured. She was taken to the Ashuganj Upazila Health Complex, where the doctor on duty declared her dead. After the accident, the covered van was captured and the driver was arrested by the police.

The second officer of the highway police station Abdul Baten said that the body was handed over to the relatives without an autopsy.
