MADHUPUR, TANGAIL, Apr 3: The government is working to modernise the postal department by integrating it into the mainstream of socio-economic activities, said Fakir Mahbub Anam Swapan, MP, Minister for the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication, ICT Division and Ministry of Science and Technology.

"The postal service is not just a government service provider; it is one of the oldest and most trusted social institutions in our society," he said, adding that with its extensive network, post offices have the capacity to reach even the most marginalised people.

Speaking at a courtesy meeting with leaders of the Bangladesh Post Employees Union at his residence in Mahishmara of Madhupur Upazila in Tangail on Saturday, the minister said post offices should no longer be limited to message exchange but transformed into effective platforms for development and economic inclusion.

At the meeting, union leaders greeted the minister with flower and presented a commemorative crest bearing the postal department's monogram. Among them were union Vice-President and Tangail district unit General Secretary Azharul Islam, office secretary Md Yunus Ali, and Madhupur Upazila unit members Zahirul Islam and Rafiqul Islam.

They placed several demands, including nationalisation of jobs, preparation of a voter list for CBA elections, construction of permanent buildings for branch post offices, and changes in job designations.

Later in the day, the minister inaugurated the foundation stones of four-storey academic buildings at Soya High School in Mushuddi union of Dhanbari Upazila and Ispinjapur Dakhil Madrasa in Bholibhodra Union.

Meanwhile, as part of a nationwide canal re-excavation programme pledged by the prime minister, Dhanbari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Miz Nurjahan Akter Sathi inaugurated the re-excavation of a 1,500-metre canal in the Rajarhat area of Birtara on Saturday afternoon.

Local BNP leaders and activists, including central executive committee member Advocate Samsuzzaman Suruj, were present at the events.
