Dr Zubaida Rahman, a physician and wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, has said that healthcare is not a privilege but a fundamental right for every citizen.
"The country's health sector has long suffered from neglect. However, the government is working to build a system where no citizen is deprived of necessary medical services," she added.
She made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking as the chief guest at an exchange meeting held at Kurmitola General Hospital in the capital. Ministers, state ministers, and other concerned officials were present at the program.
Addressing the event titled "Implementation of Dhaka-17 Electoral Commitment to Ensure Equity in Healthcare," Dr Zubaida Rahman said government hospitals are under excessive pressure, while health workers remain demotivated and unevenly deprived.
Access to quality healthcare has become an ongoing struggle for millions, she noted, adding that "72 percent of healthcare expenses are borne directly by the people, making illness a major driver of poverty."
She said the initiative aims to ensure comprehensive healthcare services for residents of Korail, Bhashantek, and Sattala areas. Efforts are underway to guarantee treatment for all-from newborns to the elderly-and to ensure that pregnant women receive timely and accessible care.
