Department of Narcotics Control (DNC) arrested a local Jubo Dal leader along with firearms and drugs during a special drive in Jashore town on Tuesday afternoon.
The arrested was identified as Rabiul Islam, a resident of Birampur village under Kotwali Police Station. He claimed to be the general secretary of ward no-1 Jubo Dal under Nawapara union.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team from the DNC district office conducted a drive in Kotwali Police Station area and arrested Rabiul Islam on suspicion.
During the drive, a pistol, three rounds of bullets and 100 grams of hemp were seized from his possessions.
DNC Inspector Nazmul Hossain Khan confirmed the matter and said that legal action is being processed against the accused under the Arms Act and Narcotics Control Act.
He said the source of the recovered firearm and possible involvement of any criminal syndicate are being investigated.
Jashore district Jubo Dal general secretary Ansarul Haque Rana said they were looking into the matter and the organisation would not patronise any criminal. Organisational action will be taken against him if the allegations are proven.
Locals alleged that Rabiul has multiple cases against him and was involved in operating a drug syndicate in the area.
They also claimed that he used his political identity to intimidate people and was involved in extortion and harassment in the name of arbitration.
