A Faridpur court sentenced a 59-year-old Imam to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for the attempted rape of a 12-year-old madrasa student on Thursday.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Shamima Parveen of Faridpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in the presence of the convict. In addition to the prison term, the convict was fined Tk 20,000 with an additional six months of simple imprisonment if he fails to pay.

The convicted, identified as Hafez Maulana Ali Hossain, a resident of Saltha upazila, served as an Imam at a local mosque at Nagarkanda upazila and a small grocery shop owner.

According to the case records, on September 6, 2025, the victim, student of a local Qawmi Madrasa, visited Hossain’s shop. The convict lured the boy into the mosque and attempted to assault him.

Locals rushed to the scene after hearing the child’s cry for help, rescued the boy, and apprehended Hossain before handing him over to the Nagarkanda police.

The victim’s father filed a case with Nagarkanda Police Station. Following an investigation by Sub-Inspector Nur Mohammad, a chargesheet was submitted on October 30, 2025.

Public Prosecutor Golam Rabbani expressed satisfaction with the verdict, stating, "Such heinous crimes are unacceptable for social order and the safety of children. This judgment serves as a vital precedent in curbing such offenses."
