The government is set to introduce a special welfare card for cultural activists as part of efforts to bring artists and cultural workers under institutional support and social security coverage, Cultural Affairs Minister Nitai Roy Chowdhury said on Thursday.
The minister made the announcement while speaking at a cultural programme titled “Nrityageeti O Probondho Path” held at the Bangladesh National Museum in the capital, marking the birth anniversaries of Rabindranath Tagore and Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Nitai said the government is also taking effective initiatives to preserve the country’s archaeological sites, folk traditions and historical landmarks. Protecting cultural heritage, he noted, is essential to safeguarding the roots and identity of the nation.
Describing culture as the foundation of national values and civilisation, the minister said it is not merely a form of entertainment. He added that the literary works, music and philosophies of Tagore and Nazrul have promoted humanity, equality and free thinking across the world.
He further said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is implementing various programmes to expand cultural activities nationwide and ensure the dignity and welfare of artists and cultural workers.
The programme featured dance performances by artistes of “Nrityanchal” under the direction of noted dancers Shibli Mohammad and Shamim Ara Nipa. Academics also presented essays on the literary and humanistic ideals of Tagore and Nazrul.
