AG urges journalists to avoid confusion in reporting court information

Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kajal on Wednesday urged journalists covering the judiciary to exercise caution while publishing court-related information and avoid creating confusion among the public through their reports.
He made the remarks during a meeting with the newly elected committee members of the Law Reporters Forum (LRF), a platform for journalists covering law, justice and human rights issues, at his office in the Supreme Court on Wednesday afternoon.
The chief law officer said court reporters have developed professional expertise and a strong sense of responsibility through years of covering judicial proceedings. He stressed that journalists should remain careful while reporting matters beyond court proceedings and written orders.
“Legal journalists have gained expertise in covering courts for a long time. They know which parts of judicial proceedings can be reported. It is not appropriate to make any matter public beyond written judgments or orders,” the attorney general said.
He also praised journalists for maintaining self-censorship in many cases and expressed confidence that members of the LRF would continue to uphold professional responsibility.
The meeting was attended by LRF President Muhammad Yeasin, General Secretary Arafat Munna, Vice President Abu Saleh Rony, Joint Secretary Tanvir Ahmed, Finance Secretary Monjur Hossain, Organising Secretary Ahmed Al Amin, Office Secretary Mahmudul Alam, Publicity and Publication Secretary Zahidul Bashar, and Executive Members Elias Sarkar and SM Nur Mohammad.
During the meeting, LRF leaders highlighted that journalists have been unable to enter courtrooms for a long time. Responding to the issue, Attorney General Kajal said he had already requested Chief Justice to reconsider the decision after assuming office.
“Senior lawyers have also made the same request to me. I will bring the matter to the attention of the Chief Justice again,” he said.
