A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced Bidisha Siddique, former wife of late former president Hussain Muhammad Ershad, to two years imprisonment in a fraud case filed with Gulshan Police Station.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam also fined her Tk 10,000, with an additional one-month jail term in default of payment.
According to the prosecution, businessman Mosharraf Hossain filed the case in 2008, alleging that Bidisha took Tk 7.5 million in 2001 in exchange for a Baridhara flat but failed to hand over the property or refund the money.
The complainant said Bidisha later issued a cheque worth Tk 7.2 million, which was dishonoured due to insufficient funds.
Plaintiff lawyer Hemayet Uddin Hiron said the court issued an arrest warrant as the accused remained absconding during the trial. Bidisha, however, told reporters she was unaware of the case.
