Police on Sunday formally pressed charges against two accused, Sohel Rana and his wife Swapna Akter, over the rape and murder of a child in Dhaka’s Pallabi area.

The chargesheet was submitted to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka by Sub-Inspector Ohiduzzaman of Pallabi Police Station, who is also the investigating officer of the case.

The case concerns the killing of Ramisa Akter, a minor victim from the Pallabi area. Police said the accused lived in a neighbouring flat and allegedly lured the child into his room before committing the crime.

Investigators stated that forensic and DNA reports obtained from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have strengthened the prosecution’s case. The report was handed over to the investigation officer a day earlier.

Authorities also confirmed that both accused were produced before the court earlier in the day under tight security.

Police said the accused woman was detained at the scene by neighbours, while Sohel Rana fled after the incident by cutting through a window grill. He was later arrested the same evening from Fatullah in Narayanganj.

According to the case dossier, the child’s body was later recovered in a dismembered state inside the accused’s flat.

A senior government official has reportedly indicated that the trial process may be expedited, though court procedures will determine the actual timeline.

The case is now moving toward formal framing of charges and trial proceedings.
