At least 29 people were killed and dozens of others sustained injuries in a series of road accidents across Bangladesh between Monday and Tuesday, May 25 to 26, 2026, as millions of holidaymakers journeyed home for the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
According to data compiled from law enforcement and media outlets, 21 fatalities occurred on Monday, highlighted by a single road accident in Tangail that alone claimed 17 lives.
An additional eight deaths were recorded on Tuesday in separate highway accidents in Barishal and Habiganj.
On Tuesday in Sirajganj, three individuals, including a CNG-run autorickshaw driver, were killed and another injured after a passenger bus rammed the vehicle on the Dhaka-Rajshahi Highway in Sirajganj’s Solonga area on Tuesday evening.
The incident occurred on the Charia Kandipara Bridge adjacent to the RAB-12 office under Solonga Police Station.
Two of the deceased were identified as CNG driver Sorman Hossain, 35, of Sharif Solonga village and carpenter Gobinda Sutradhar, 40, son of late Harendra Nath Sutradhar of Angaru village in the same area. The identity of another deceased person could not be known immediately.
According to police, a Rajshahi-bound passenger bus from Dhaka hit the CNG-run autorickshaw from behind when it reached the Charia Kandipara Bridge area.
In Barishal, three members of a family were killed on the Barishal�"Dhaka Highway on Tuesday afternoon. The deceased were identified as Firoz Mahmud, 36, a resident of Uzirpur municipality, his wife Monira Begum, 26, and their four-year-old daughter Jannat.
The family was travelling from Barishal to Gaurnadi by motorcycle around 12:30 PM when a passenger bus collided head-on with their vehicle in the Gaurnadi upazila area. The impact left all three riders critically injured. Local residents rushed them to a nearby hospital, where attending doctors declared them dead.
Mohasin Rashid, Officer-in-Charge of Gaurnadi Highway Police Station, confirmed the details, noting that legal procedures regarding the incident were underway.
In Habiganj, a motorcyclist and his pillion passenger were killed early Tuesday morning when a truck rammed their motorcycle on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway in Madhabpur upazila.
The victims were identified as Abul Bashar, 35, son of Abdul Baten from Beghred village in Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj; and Ashiq Ahmed, 25, son of Selim Mia, a resident of the Khilkhet area in Dhaka.
According to the local police sources, the fatal crash occurred at around 1:00 AM near the Saheb Bari Bus Stand area under Noapara union of the upazila.
The deadliest single incident of the travel period occurred during the early hours of Monday in Tangail’s Kalihati upazila, claiming the lives of 17 seasonal agricultural workers.
A truck loaded with iron rods was transporting the workers from Chattogram to northern districts for holiday paddy harvesting. Additional Superintendent of Police Fauzia Habib Khan stated that the driver lost control of the vehicle in the Soratoil area on the Bangabandhu Bridge approach road, causing the heavy vehicle to overturn and plunge into a roadside ditch.
Local authorities confirmed that 15 people died on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries after being rushed to the hospital. The local administration identified 15 of the victims, noting that the majority hailed from the Naogaon and Rajshahi districts.
In Bogra, a father and his two-year-old daughter were killed on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway on Monday when an unidentified vehicle struck their motorcycle in Shajahanpur upazila.
The deceased, Anisur Rahman and his daughter Pushpa, were travelling to their ancestral village in Pabna for the Eid holidays. Anisur’s wife, Aisha Begum, survived the crash but was hospitalized in a critical condition.
Munshiganj: An 18-year-old lorry helper, identified as Antar Das, died following a severe collision between a lorry and a covered van on Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Gajaria. The driver of the covered van was transferred to a Dhaka hospital in critical condition.
Gopalganj: A violent three-way collision involving a passenger bus, a microbus, and a private car left one person dead and 15 others injured. The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Sadar upazila on Monday afternoon, resulting in the death of the microbus driver on the spot.
