Dhaka University on Tuesday launched a joint research initiative with China's First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) aimed at strengthening marine resource management and advancing the blue economy.
A day-long seminar was held on campus to inaugurate modern ocean monitoring and environmental modelling activities in Bangladesh's coastal waters under HEAT ATF Sub-Project 13025. The programme was jointly organised by Dhaka University's International Center for Ocean Governance (ICOG-DU) and China's First Institute of Oceanography.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam attended the opening session as chief guest. Speakers included Professor Dr Md Humayun Kabir, Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences; Dr Tonya Astrid Capuano, international expert of the HEAT project; Dr Shumin Jiang, scientist at FIO; and Professor Dr K M Azam Chowdhury, Director of ICOG.
Meanwhile, Dhaka University will observe "Dhaka University Day" on July 1.
According to university sources, academic activities at Dhaka University formally began on July 1, 1921. Marking the day, the authorities have chalked out various programmes. Teachers, students, officers and employees will gather at Smriti Chirantan Chattar at 9:30am, followed by a colourful procession on campus led by the Vice-Chancellor.
At 10:00am, the national flag, along with the flags of Dhaka University and its residential halls, will be hoisted at Payra Chattar. A discussion meeting will be held at the TSC auditorium, along with the publication of a souvenir and installation of decorative arches at different entrances to the university.
