The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has passed a formal condolence motion following the passing of former Bangladesh Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, paying tribute to her extensive legacy in South Asian politics.

The motion, adopted during a session of the state assembly, lauded Khaleda Zia as a pivotal figure who shaped the democratic landscape of Bangladesh. It highlighted her distinguished career as the nation’s first female Prime Minister and her enduring influence as a leader whose impact resonated across the subcontinent. The assembly noted that her death represents a significant loss to the regional political sphere.

During the session, lawmakers observed a moment of silence to honour the late leader, offering prayers for her soul and expressing solidarity with her grieving family and the people of Bangladesh.

In a diplomatic gesture of respect, the West Bengal government has directed the Indian High Commission in Dhaka to ensure that an official copy of the condolence motion is delivered to her immediate relatives. Officials stated the move was intended to honour the memory of a former head of government from a closely bonded neighbouring nation.

The gesture is being viewed by analysts as a testament to the deep-rooted historical and cultural ties between West Bengal and Bangladesh. Experts suggest that such high-level recognition of prominent political figures helps foster mutual respect and strengthens the cordial relationship between the two neighbouring populations.

Khaleda Zia, who served three terms as Prime Minister, remained at the helm of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for decades. Her leadership and political journey are widely regarded as a defining chapter in the modern history of Bangladesh.
