Jamaat to contest Presidential Election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to participate in the upcoming presidential election.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council held at its central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka, on Saturday evening. The party later confirmed the decision in a press release.

The meeting began at 7pm and was chaired by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar and other members of the Executive Council were present.

According to the press release, the meeting held detailed discussions on the upcoming presidential election and unanimously decided that Jamaat would participate in the polls.

To finalise the opposition candidate, Jamaat has called a meeting of the top leaders of the 11-party alliance for Sunday. The alliance will make the final decision on the opposition’s candidate at the meeting.

The meeting also discussed the country’s overall political situation, constitutional reform and various political programmes announced by the 11-party alliance.

Former President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned from office on July 24. Under the constitutional provision, the Election Commission is required to arrange the election of a new president within 90 days of the resignation.

The Election Commission announced the presidential election schedule on Thursday. According to the schedule, voting will be held on August 20.
