The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has adopted a condolence motion expressing deep sorrow over the death of former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.

The motion paid tribute to her contributions to Bangladesh's politics, democratic movements and public life on June 2, 2026.

According to sources at the PMO, the condolence motion described Khaleda Zia as an influential and significant figure in Bangladesh's political landscape. It noted that during her long political career, she served as the country's prime minister and played a prominent role as a recognised leader in South Asian politics.

The motion said her death had created a void not only in Bangladesh's political arena but also in the wider subcontinent.

Members present during the Assembly session paid their respects to the late leader, prayed for the eternal peace of her soul and conveyed condolences to her bereaved family.

Meanwhile, the West Bengal government has instructed the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh to take the necessary steps to deliver a copy of the condolence motion to Khaleda Zia's family members.

According to the government, the initiative was undertaken as a gesture of respect to Khaleda Zia as a former prime minister of a neighbouring country.

Observers viewed the move as a reflection of the historic ties and mutual respect shared by the peoples of Bangladesh and India.

Political analysts said such gestures towards prominent political figures of the subcontinent help strengthen cordial relations between the people of the two countries.

Khaleda Zia served three terms as the prime minister of Bangladesh and led the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) for many years. Her political career, struggles and leadership remain an important chapter in Bangladesh's political history.
