The Energy Division has clarified that the government is drafting a policy titled ‘Private Sector Refined Petroleum Oil Import, Storage, Transport, Distribution and Marketing Policy, 2026’ to ensure an uninterrupted and secure supply of fuel oil in the country.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the division said the proposed policy primarily aims to ensure national energy security and maintain an uninterrupted fuel supply system.

It said the policy would also establish a transparent and competitive system, allowing the use of private sector infrastructure and investment capacity alongside existing government arrangements during emergencies or crises, in the 
national interest.

The policy will be finalised after incorporating opinions and suggestions from all stakeholders in the energy sector, the statement said.

The division said the policy would only be considered if public interest, energy security, a competitive market system, transparency and accountability could be ensured.

"Therefore, this policy does not provide any scope for granting special privileges to any specific individual, institution or group," it said.

Recently, some media outlets and social media platforms have published speculative and false information about the proposed policy, which was unintended, the statement said.

The Energy Division requested all concerned parties to act responsibly in reporting and discussing the matter.
