Budget session begins

The first Budget Session (Second Session) of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad commenced on Sunday with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presiding over the proceedings. According to a decision of the Business Advisory Committee, the session will continue until July 9.

On the opening day, Parliament adopted a condolence motion in memory of 16 former ministers and members of parliament, including Tofail Ahmed, a prominent leader of the 1969 Mass Uprising, organizer of the Liberation War and former minister, and former minister and BNP leader Mosharraf Hossain. The motion was moved by the Speaker and unanimously adopted by the House. Members then observed a one-minute silence and offered prayers for the departed souls.

The condolence motion also paid tribute to former Awami League leaders and MPs AKM Rahmat Ullah, Dabirul Islam, ABM Anwarul Haque and Moslem Uddin; former minister Shafique Ahmed; former MP Abdul Matin; former state ministers Mizanur Rahman Sinha and Professor MA Mannan; former MPs Dewan Shamsul Abedin and GM Fazlul Haque; Jatiya Party MPs Syed Md. Qaiser, Abu Noor Mohammad Bahaul Haque and Golam Sarwar Milon; and CPB lawmaker Md. Samsuddoha.

Parliament also expressed condolences on the deaths of Professor Dilara Hafiz, wife of the Speaker; National Professor Sufia Ahmed; poet Helal Hafiz; Chhayanaut President Sanjida Khatun; renowned musician Mustafa Zaman Abbasi; writer Badruddin Umar; Nazrul Sangeet artiste Dalia Naushin.
