Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni on Tuesday said personal assistants to Members of Parliament (MPs) play a crucial role in strengthening the foundations of democracy at the grassroots level and making the parliamentary system more vibrant and effective.
Speaking as the chief guest at an orientation programme for personal assistants to MPs at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh in the capital, he stressed the importance of awareness and professional competence among parliamentary aides, reports UNB.
“The fact that you have attended this orientation programme shows your willingness to learn laws, rules and regulations. It also demonstrates your belief in democracy and your commitment to institutionalising democratic practices,” the chief whip said.
He noted that personal assistants to MPs contribute significantly to sustaining democratic continuity and ensuring an active and effective Parliament.
Highlighting the importance of their responsibilities, Moni said the success of an MP often depends considerably on the support and guidance provided by his or her personal assistant.
“MPs place a great deal of trust in their personal assistants and often listen to their advice. It is your responsibility to help keep them on the right path,” he said, warning that they share moral responsibility for the actions of the MPs they serve.
Referring to the national budget, the chief whip said it is not merely a collection of figures but a reflection of the hopes and aspirations of the people.
“Every citizen, from a beggar to the wealthiest individual, contributes to the state through taxes in one form or another. You should study the budget carefully, understand its implications and help MPs assess how public funds can be distributed fairly for the welfare and development of the people,” he said.
National Adviser to the European Union Dr Khandaker Golam Moazzem delivered the welcome address at the programme chaired by Parliament Secretariat Secretary Barrister Md Golam Sorwar Bhuiyan.
