Karima Khatun Urges July Charter Implementation

Professor Mosammat Karima Khatun, President of the Democratic Women’s Party, on Monday called for the immediate implementation of the July National Charter and the referendum verdict.

Consequently, she demanded equal rights of women across all national spheres.

These remarks were made by her as a special guest at a discussion titled ‘Women’s Contribution to the July Uprising.’11-party alliance organized the event at the Muktijoddha Hall of the Diploma Engineers Institute in Dhaka.

Head of the women’s wing of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), Karima Khatun said July Uprising of 2024 was the result of public anger accumulated over 15-16 years of authoritarian rule.

Women played a vital role in the movement by joining street protests, supporting the injured and assisting the demonstrators, she added.

She claimed that leaders and activists of the Democratic Women's Party joined student demonstrations in 41 districts starting July 16.

Karima shared that she sustained injuries during the movement, while her husband suffered bullet wounds in Uttara. She alleged that activists from the Chhatra League and Jubo League attacked them.

Furthermore, she reported that five LDP activists were killed in Dhaka, four were permanently disabled, and 15 others suffered bullet injuries.

Calling for the implementation of the July National Charter, she urged political parties to end discrimination against women in nominating candidates.

She noted that women account for 51 percent of the population and deserve equal opportunities in politics, governance, education, and all other sectors.
