The four-day 57th Border Conference between Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) ended in New Delhi on Friday without any clear breakthrough on key contentious issues, particularly border killings and alleged push-ins.
Held from 08 to 11 June 2026, the meeting concluded with both sides agreeing to deepen cooperation along the shared border through improved intelligence sharing and coordinated patrols, according to a joint statement issued after the talks. However, longstanding concerns remained unresolved amid continued tensions over alleged undocumented cross-border movement.
The discussions also focused on "illegal, inadvertent and forcible crossing at border areas," an issue that has drawn increasing attention in recent months. BGB has reported foiling several attempted crossings recently and has stepped up deployments, intelligence operations and drone surveillance along border areas.
According to BGB press releases, the Bangladesh delegation comprised 14 members led by Major General Mohammad Ashrafuzzaman Siddiqui, Director General of BGB. Officials from the Ministries of Home Affairs, Foreign Affairs, Shipping, Land Records and Surveys, the Joint Rivers Commission and other agencies were also part of the delegation.
The Indian side was represented by a 12-member delegation led by Shri Praveen Kumar, IPS, Director General of BSF. Both sides provisionally agreed to hold the next Director General-level conference in November 2026 in Dhaka.
During the talks, the BGB Director General expressed deep concern over the deaths of unarmed Bangladeshi nationals along the border, allegedly caused by the use of lethal and non-lethal weapons by BSF personnel and Indian nationals. He described the incidents as violations of human rights and urged the BSF to take effective steps to reduce border killings to zero, calling for sustained efforts and strict accountability.
