Gas has reportedly been detected in a tube well in Rangabali upazila of Patuakhali, with locals saying flames could be seen burning from gas emerging from underground.

The incident occurred while a tube well was being installed at the house of Kamal Hossain in Nayar Char area of Char Montaz union, according to locals.

Kamal said bubbling sounds had been coming from underwater around the tube well for the past 20 to 25 days. Curious locals later lit the gas and found that it caught fire.

He said a small pipe was subsequently used to ignite the gas, and flames continued to burn. The matter was later reported to the administration. Kamal also claimed that the gas had been used for cooking.

Locals have urged the authorities to conduct proper tests to determine whether the gas is natural gas and, if confirmed, explore the possibility of using the resource.

Rangabali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Hasan said the administration learned about the matter several days ago and that tests are needed to determine whether there is underground gas at the site.

He said the matter had been reported to higher authorities and Kamal’s application had been forwarded to the district administration.

“The presence of underground gas can only be confirmed after proper testing,” Nazmul said.
