BPGA election sparks debate over future leadership

The upcoming election of the Bangladesh Professional Golfers Association (BPGA), the country's apex body representing professional golfers, has triggered discussion within the golfing community over the organisation's future leadership and governance.

Golf has steadily grown in popularity in Bangladesh in recent years, with increasing participation among players and enthusiasts. As preparations for the BPGA election gather pace, stakeholders are closely watching developments surrounding the contest for key leadership positions.

One of the figures drawing attention ahead of the election is Brig Gen GM Quamrul Islam (Retd), who currently serves as general secretary of the Bangladesh Squash Federation.

According to individuals familiar with the election process, Quamrul Islam has been actively engaging with members and stakeholders in recent months as part of efforts to secure support ahead of the vote. His possible involvement in the leadership race has prompted discussion among sections of the sporting community and BPGA members.

Some stakeholders have raised questions regarding his past political and administrative associations. They point to his reported proximity to influential figures during the tenure of the previous Awami League government and note that he had sought to contest the 2020 Dhaka North City Corporation mayoral election with the nomination of the Jatiya Party.

Critics argue that sports organisations should remain free from political influence and that leadership positions should be filled through a transparent and accountable process focused on the interests of athletes and the development of the sport.

"Golf administration should be guided by professionalism, transparency and the interests of players," said a sports organiser who requested anonymity. "The election should help strengthen the organisation and ensure confidence among all stakeholders."

Several individuals associated with the sport emphasised the need for a competitive and credible election process, saying the BPGA's future leadership should be capable of advancing the interests of professional golfers while safeguarding the organisation's reputation.

Brig Gen GM Quamrul Islam (Retd) could not be reached for comment.

Stakeholders say they hope the election process remains transparent and inclusive, and that the outcome contributes positively to the development of golf in Bangladesh.
