Switzerland coach Murat Yakin could not accept Breel Embolo's red card in the World Cup quarterfinal against Argentina. He called the rule behind the VAR intervention unacceptable.
Switzerland equalized 1-1 in the 67th minute with a goal from Dan Ndoye. After that, they were putting pressure on Argentina. But just five minutes later, the match-changing incident happened.
Argentina’s Leandro Paredes challenged Embolo for the ball in midfield. Embolo fell to the ground. Referee Joao Pimheiro initially issued a yellow card.
The replay was watched on the monitor. After that, the referee decided Embolo began falling before Paredes' contact. Consequently, he cancelled Paredes' yellow card.
He then showed Embolo a yellow card for diving. As Embolo had already received a card in the first half, it became his second yellow. Thus, the Swiss forward had to leave the field with a red card.
According to Yakin, there was no need to show cards regarding that incident. The referee should have let the play continue.
After the match, Yakin said they had to suffer due to a rule that is completely unacceptable to him. He remarked that the VAR intervention was unnecessary. He also stated that this rule has nothing to do with football.
In the words of the Swiss coach: ‘This rule destroyed our match. It is very painful to lose like this. Unfortunately, we have to accept the decision.’
Yakin claimed that Switzerland was taking control of the match before Embolo's red card. They equalized after falling behind against the world champions. The momentum of the match was in their favor at that time.
Embolo broke into tears after seeing the red card. His teammates comforted him and took him off the field. Yakin, however, refused to blame the forward. According to him, Embolo is devastated and the incident was the referee's mistake.
Before the 2026 World Cup, lawmakers IFAB expanded the scope of the mistaken identity rule. Under the new interpretation, VAR can intervene if an offense by an opposing player is detected after a card is shown to a player. This was the second time the rule was applied this way in this World Cup.
