Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon on Monday told Parliament that the government has undertaken a series of initiatives to transform the country’s information and broadcasting sector into a modern, technology-driven and internationally competitive industry.
He made the remark while replying to a starred tabled question from BNP lawmaker Rafiqul Islam Hilali (Netrakona-3) in Parliament.
The minister said, “The government is implementing various activities to make the country’s information and broadcasting sector modern, technology-based and internationally standard.”
He also said that the government has increased the use of modern digital technologies in the broadcasting and information services of Bangladesh Television (BTV), Bangladesh Betar, Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS), and the Department of Films and Publications.
Swapon informed the House that initiatives have been taken to gradually introduce a Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) broadcasting system at BTV.
He said the government is also carrying out the digital transformation of Bangladesh Betar and expanding its online and mobile app-based broadcasting services.
Highlighting efforts to strengthen public communication, he said, “Information technology-based public awareness activities, social media management and government information services on digital platforms are being expanded.”
The minister noted that various policy and institutional support measures are being provided to develop and modernise the film industry and enhance the participation of Bangladeshi films in the international market.
He further said the government is implementing training programmes, workshops and capacity-building activities at home and abroad to improve the professional skills of media personnel.
On media governance, Swapon said, “Necessary laws, policies and guidelines are being formulated and updated to ensure the right to information, media development and responsible journalism.”
The minister also told Parliament that e-governance and digital services are being expanded to make the flow of government information more transparent, faster and citizen-friendly.
In addition, he said, cooperation with international broadcasting organisations and development partners is being strengthened, while activities are being aligned with global media trends to ensure the continued advancement of the country’s information and broadcasting sector.
