The government of Bangladesh is continuing efforts to introduce PayPal and other international payment services to facilitate cross-border transactions for the country’s freelancers.

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Faqir Mahbub Anam on Wednesday informed the matter before the Parliament, reports UNB.

“To facilitate international transactions for the country’s freelancers, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division is continuing regular communications and coordination with Bangladesh Bank, relevant policymaking bodies, the authorities of relevant international service providers including PayPal to launch payment services,” he said.

The Minister said this, while replying to a question from BNP lawmaker Nipun Roy Chowdhury (Women Seat-11) in the House.

Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, tabled the question-and-answer session after the day’s sitting began around 3:00pm.

Mahbub Anam said work is underway to formulate a comprehensive policy for freelancers aimed at skills development, market expansion, social security, tax simplification and formal recognition of their income from foreign sources.

He said the ICT Division is committed to building a supportive, institutionalised and internationally connected work environment for the country’s freelancers.
