
KHULNA, June 30: Khulna City Corporation (KCC) Administrator Nazrul Islam Manju on Tuesday said the government has launched a nationwide special cleanliness campaign alongside a tree plantation programme to prevent dengue and improve the urban environment.
"As part of the campaign, every drain in the city is being cleared of waste while breeding grounds of Aedes mosquitoes are being destroyed. The drive will continue until the end of the monsoon season," he said.
The KCC administrator made the remarks while inaugurating a tree plantation programme at Abu Hanif Madrasa premises in Notun Bazar area of the city as the chief guest.
The programme is being implemented in Ward No. 22 at the initiative of former KCC councillor Mahbub Kaiser.
Manju said Aedes mosquitoes, the carrier of dengue, usually bite during the morning hours. "That is why we are trying to make educational institutions mosquito-free," he said.
The KCC administrator sought cooperation from city dwellers to make the campaign successful and urged them to plant more trees to build a greener city.
He inaugurated the programme by planting a sapling at the madrasa premises and later distributed tree saplings among local residents.
KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed, Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, Ward No. 22 Officer-in-Charge Khan Habibur Rahman, social workers Yusuf Harun Majnu, Tarikullah Khan, Zahid Kamal Titu, Ziaur Rahman Zia, Sirajul Islam Liton, Khan Moinul Hasan Mithu and other local dignitaries were present.
Later, the KCC administrator inspected drain excavation, waste removal and water drainage activities along Lower Jashore Road and Haji Mohsin Road in Ward No. 29.
He also visited Government Model Secondary School, Victoria Infant Government Primary School and Sunflower School to inspect sanitation, mosquito control and drainage facilities.
KCC Chief Executive Officer Rajib Ahmed, Chief Engineer Mashiuzzaman Khan, former councillor Mahbub Qaiser, Ward Officer-in-Charge Khan Habibur Rahman and teachers of the institutions were present during the inspection.
