A Dhaka court on Wednesday sentenced expelled Awami League leader Enamul Haque Enu and his brother Rupan Bhuiyan, to 10 years imprisonment each in a money laundering case filed with Wari Police Station.
Judge Nur-e-Alam Bhuiyan of Dhaka Special Judge's Court-6 also fined the two brothers a total of Tk 646.2 million (Tk 64.62 crore). They will have to serve an additional six months in prison if they fail to pay the fine. The court acquitted eight co-accused, citing insufficient evidence.
According to the prosecution, the case was filed by RAB-3 on February 27, 2020, alleging that Enu and Rupan concealed Tk 265.5 million (Tk 26.55 crore) obtained through illegal means.
Investigators submitted the charge sheet on August 8, 2021, against the two brothers and eight others. Charges were framed on September 18, 2022, and the court examined 13 prosecution witnesses before delivering the verdict.
