Thousands of leaders and activists from across Rangpur division joined a divisional rally organised by the 11-party alliance on Saturday, defying heavy rain to press home a four-point demand.
The rally, held at Rangpur Zilla School ground, called for the implementation of the Teesta Mega Project, effective steps to enforce the outcome of a proposed referendum, an end to border killings and alleged push-ins, and measures to ease public suffering.
Participants from different districts, upazilas and unions arrived in processions from the morning. Although torrential rain began in the afternoon, the turnout remained strong, with many attendees staying at the venue under umbrellas or plastic sheets while listening to the speeches.
The event was attended by leaders of the alliance, including Jamaat-e-Islami central executive council member Maulana Mumtaz Uddin, MPs Mahbubur Rahman Belal, Golam Rabbani, Anwarul Islam and Raihan Siraji, along with local leaders of the alliance.
Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman attended the rally as the chief guest, while Nahid Islam, convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP), presided over the programme.
Senior leaders from other alliance partners, including the Liberal Democratic Party, Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party and Bangladesh Labour Party, also addressed the gathering.
