NILPHAMARI, July 12: Four people, including a mother and her two young children, were killed after a speeding sand-laden truck rammed into a battery-run passenger van in Domar upazila of Nilphamari on Sunday afternoon.
Two others were seriously injured in the crash and were later referred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment after receiving first aid at Domar Upazila Health Complex.
The accident occurred at around 3:30pm on the Domar-Jaldhaka regional road in the Panga Motukpur-Nadia area.
According to police and local residents, the passenger van was travelling from Domar to Jaldhaka when a speeding sand-laden truck, approaching from behind, lost control and slammed into the vehicle. The impact crushed the van and hurled it off the roadside.
The van driver and three passengers died on the spot.
Police, citing survivors and witnesses, said the family was travelling to a wedding in Moraler Danga of Boragari union.
The deceased were identified as Parimal Barman, 40, the van driver and son of Ali Barman of Nadiapara; Protima Rani, 28, wife of Pradip Barman; and the couple's two children, Pitosa, 8, and Jadav, 4.
Fire Service personnel, police and local residents carried out rescue operations before the injured were taken to hospital.
The accident cast a pall of grief over the area, with distraught relatives gathering at the scene and the hospital. Traffic on the Domar�"Jaldhaka regional road was disrupted briefly before police restored normal movement.
Domar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Habibullah confirmed the incident, saying the bodies would be handed over to the victims' families after legal formalities. The truck has been seized, and efforts are underway to arrest its driver. Legal proceedings are in progress.
