JCD, Juba-dal take up arms outside BRUR campus

Activists from Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Jubo Dal, and Shecchashebok Dal gathered outside the Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) main gate with domestic weapons and sticks.
The gathering follows an earlier clash between JCD and Islami Chhatra Shibir on campus. Both groups had previously announced counter-demonstration programs.
From 4:00PM on Tuesday (August 4), activists from various parts of Rangpur city began assembling near the university’s main gate. Witnesses reported seeing knives, machetes, and bamboo sticks in their hands.
The activists chanted slogans against Jamaat-Shibir during the demonstration. A Jubo Dal activist present at the program stated they gathered to show solidarity with the university JCD unit. He added that general students and local residents reject Jamaat-Shibir activities.
Although Shibir and its allied organizations announced a program at the same location, their leaders and activists did not appear at the site.
BRUR Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Ferdous Rahman stated that a large police force was deployed to maintain order. He said the administration instructed non-student activists to stay outside the campus. He added that police forces are on high alert to prevent the opposing groups from confronting each other.
The proctor further noted that another group had reportedly headed toward the area from Lalbagh. Law enforcement agencies and the officer-in-charge of Tajhat Police Station were notified to ensure the situation remains under control.
