Court defers Hadi murder probe submission date for 18th time

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam fixed the date on Wednesday after CID Assistant Superintendent of Police and investigating officer Abdul Qadir Bhuiyan failed to submit the report.

The Detective Branch (DB) police filed a chargesheet on January 6 against 17 people, including former ward councillor Taijul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and former Chhatra League activist Faisal Karim Masud. However, the complainant, Inqilab Mancha member secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, challenged the charge sheet, prompting the court to order a further investigation by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Hadi, who rose to prominence during the July uprising and the movement to ban the Awami League, had announced his candidacy as an independent contender from the Dhaka-8 constituency in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election. He was shot on December 12, last year, while on a rickshaw and was later flown to Singapore for treatment. There he succombed to his injuries on December 18.

According to the DB chargesheet, the killing was driven by political vengeance and aimed at disrupting the parliamentary election and intimidating voters. Five of the accused, including alleged mastermind Faisal Karim Masud, are still absconding.
