Stakeholders in Bangladesh's internet service sector on Wednesday urged the government to immediately arrest those responsible for a recent attack on an internet service provider's (ISP) office in Chattogram, warning that continued violence and extortion could jeopardise the country's digital economy and disrupt essential online services.
The demand came during a human chain organised in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka by internet service providers and industry representatives.
The participants alleged that ISPs across the country have increasingly faced attacks, vandalism, looting, illegal occupation of facilities and extortion, putting both network infrastructure and employees at risk.
They warned that such incidents could undermine internet connectivity for millions of users and disrupt key sectors, including education, healthcare, e-commerce, freelancing, mobile financial services and government digital services.
"It is impossible to ensure uninterrupted internet services in an insecure environment," said Aminul Hakim, president of the Internet Service Providers Association of Bangladesh (ISPAB).
