DNCC evicts roadside shops in Gulshan Niketan

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) on Sunday conducted an eviction drive in Niketan residential area under Gulshan-1, removing a number of illegally established roadside shops that authorities said had long occupied public roads and disrupted traffic movement.

The eviction drive led by a DNCC executive magistrate was carried out on Road No. 3 in Block B of Niketan. Several temporary structures were demolished by bulldozers in the presence of police, locals and leaders of Niketan Society and security officials.

According to the Niketan Society, the roadside shops had been operating illegally for a long time, causing traffic congestion and obstructing movement. Society representatives said security personnel frequently struggled to manage traffic because of the encroachments.

Society's leaders said shop owners had been requested on multiple times to remove the illegal structures voluntarily. However, after they failed to comply, the city corporation proceeded with the eviction drive.

They said the authorities would not allow any illegal structures encroaching on public roads in the residential area to remain, citing concerns over public safety, traffic flow and the preservation of the neighbourhood's residential environment.
