Shahidi steps down as Afghanistan ODI captain

Afghanistan batter Hashmatullah Shahidi has resigned as the national team’s ODI captain, ending a leadership stint of more than four years.

The 31-year-old took charge in early 2022 and led Afghanistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Under his captaincy, Afghanistan recorded notable wins over England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and the Netherlands at the 2023 World Cup, narrowly missing out on the knockout stage.

Announcing his decision on social media, Shahidi said it had been an honour to lead the team and thanked his teammates, coaches and officials for their support throughout his tenure.

Shahidi captained Afghanistan in 55 ODIs, winning 27 matches. His only ODI century�"102 against India in Chennai last June�"also came while serving as captain.

He confirmed he will continue to play as a regular member of the ODI side. Afghanistan’s five-match ODI series against Ireland begins next month, with a new captain expected to be appointed before the tour.
