Waterlogging in the Maite Beel of Melandaha upazila has submerged around 300 acres of seedbeds, early-season paddy and jute, leaving hundreds of farmers facing heavy losses.

A visit to the area in Char No. 2 under Shyampur Union found that recent heavy rainfall had inundated the wetland. Farmers alleged that a drainage route previously used to release excess water had become blocked after houses were built near the outlet, preventing water from flowing out.

Local farmers, including Nur Hossain, Akbar Ali and Md Suruzzaman, said the beel is one of the area's main agricultural zones, producing paddy, jute, maize and other crops.

They said continuous rainfall and stagnant water had already damaged seedbeds, early paddy and some jute fields. With nearly 300 acres still under water, more than 500 farmers are expected to be affected if the situation persists.

The farmers urged the authorities to take immediate steps to restore drainage and prevent further crop losses.

Upazila Agriculture Officer Abdur Rouf said he had inspected the affected area and was informed that the drainage channel passes through privately owned land, where construction had obstructed the natural flow of water.

"We have asked the affected farmers to come forward. The upazila administration and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC) will try to resolve the problem," he said.

Repeated attempts to contact Upazila Nirbahi Officer Jinnatul Ara for comment were unsuccessful.
