CNG drivers block Dhaka-Mymensingh highway over gas crisis

CNG auto-rickshaw drivers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on Tuesday, July 22 after failing to obtain gas from the filling stations. The protest caused severe traffic jams on both sides of the highway and disrupted commuter movements.

Blockade began around 9:30AM in the Digarkanda area of Mymensingh city. Drivers took the streets and chanted slogans demanding immediate restoration of regular CNG supply.

They stated that acute shortage across the local filling stations over the past few days have severely threatened their livelihood.

According to the protesting drivers, long queues form at filling stations starting early in the morning. Many drivers return empty-handed after waiting for several hours, losing a major portion of their daily earnings.

Impact of the blockade expanded exponentially, standing buses, trucks, private vehicles, microbuses, and ambulances were left stranded on the road. Tailbacks stretched several kilometers in both ways and spilled over onto connecting roads. Office-goers, especially students are the primary sufferers of this protest as they were late for work, classes or examinations.

Local resident Monowar Hossain pointed out that CNG auto-rickshaws serve as the primary mode of public transit in Mymensingh city and surrounding regions. Disruptions in gas supply cripple the local public transport network and cause widespread public suffering.

Mymensingh Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shibbirul Ahmed stated that police personnel responded to the scene and held discussions with the protesters. The drivers lifted the blockade around 12:00PM, after which traffic movement gradually returned to normal.
