A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent one accused to jail in a case filed against Satkhira-4 lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and four others over the alleged attempt to murder his personal driver.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered the imprisonment of Aminur Rahman after the investigating officer sought his detention pending completion of the probe.

The case, filed with Pallabi Police Station, accuses Nazrul (74) along with Aminur Rahman (55), Masum Billah (41), Motassim Billah (25) and Rakibul Hasan (30) of assaulting and attempting to strangle Obaidur Rahman. Aminur is also the complainant’s cousin.

According to the first information report (FIR), Obaidur, who worked as Nazrul’s personal driver, objected to an alleged illicit relationship between the MP and his niece and urged him to end it. The complaint alleges that Nazrul later suspected Obaidur of leaking compromising videos involving the woman and sharing them with the media and a blackmailing group.

The complainant alleged that, acting on Nazrul’s instructions, the other accused lured him into a room at his sister’s residence in Pallabi’s Kalshi area on July 14 and assaulted him with sticks. He further claimed that Aminur attempted to kill him by strangulation before family members intervened, prompting the attackers to flee.

Obaidur said he later received treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital and has since gone into hiding due to security concerns and alleged death threats.

The court also directed investigators to submit their report by August 28.
