Youth held with Yaba, 16kg cannabis in Habiganj

A young man was arrested with 385 Yaba tablets and 16 kilograms of cannabis during a joint operation by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-9 and Madhabpur Police in Habiganj's Madhabpur upazila early Friday.

The arrest was made at around 1:05am at a checkpoint set up at the Madhabpur bus stand on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.

The arrestee, Md Faridul Islam, 24, is the son of Md Mostafa of Kandapara area under Roumari upazila in Kurigram district.

According to RAB-9, acting on a tip-off that a man was transporting narcotics from a border area in Sylhet to Kurigram by a Sagarika Paribahan bus, a joint team from RAB-9's CPC-3 Shaistaganj Camp and Madhabpur Police set up the checkpoint.

During a search of the bus, Faridul allegedly attempted to flee from the rear seat but was detained. RAB said he later admitted to possessing narcotics.

A search of an olive-coloured bag stored in the vehicle's luggage compartment led to the recovery of 16kg of cannabis, while 385 Yaba tablets were found packed in an airtight black polythene zip bag.

RAB claimed that during preliminary questioning, the suspect said he had collected the drugs from a border area for distribution in different parts of the country.

The accused and the seized narcotics have been handed over to Madhabpur Police Station for legal action under the Narcotics Control Act, 2018.
