As Bangladesh's economy expands, ensuring a safe and fair marketplace requires both effective enforcement and informed consumers. Amid persistent concerns over rising prices, counterfeit goods, misleading advertisements and service irregularities, the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) has emerged as a key institution safeguarding consumer interests through market surveillance, complaint resolution, enforcement drives and public awareness initiatives, helping strengthen consumer confidence and market discipline.
Amid price volatility, the rapid growth of e-commerce and rising service fraud, the Directorate has intensified nationwide market inspections to curb overcharging, ensure price display compliance, prevent the sale of expired goods and take action against adulteration and other unfair trade practices.
The scale of the Directorate's enforcement reflects its growing role in regulating the market. According to the latest consolidated data, the DNCRP has conducted 49,968 market surveillance drives across the country since its establishment. During these drives, the agency fined 120,102 business establishments, collecting Tk 824.567 million in penalties. In addition, the Directorate received 56,124 written complaints from consumers and resolved 51,759 of them.
Investigations into these complaints resulted in another Tk 50.943 million in fines. Overall, the agency has collected Tk 875.510 million (approximately Tk 87.55 crore) through market surveillance and complaint resolution. Effective market supervision strengthens public confidence by encouraging responsible business practices and deterring unethical conduct. As e-commerce expands, the Directorate has also intensified efforts to address growing complaints over delayed deliveries, misleading advertisements, non-delivery after payment and other online consumer rights violations.
With the rapid growth of e-commerce, consumer protection has gained a new dimension. Complaints related to delayed deliveries, failure to provide ordered products, misleading online advertisements and non-delivery after payment have increased in recent years. The Directorate's role in addressing these emerging challenges has become increasingly important as Bangladesh's digital marketplace continues to expand.
The government initiatives alone cannot ensure consumer protection without public participation. Consumers can play a vital role by collecting purchase receipts, checking product expiry dates and prices, and reporting irregularities whenever they encounter them.
The activities of the DNCRP are now extending beyond traditional market inspections. The organization is working towards establishing a fair, transparent and consumer-friendly marketplace by addressing complaints, ensuring accountability and taking action against dishonest business practices.
