CNG, ride-share drivers struggle amid gas shortage

Ride-share and CNG-run vehicle drivers are bearing the brunt of the ongoing gas shortage, with many saying they are unable to earn enough to support their families as long queues and low gas pressure continue to disrupt operations.

Yunus Mia, who drives a CNG-run private car on the Uber platform under a monthly contract of Tk30,000, said the crisis has severely affected his income.

Speaking at a tea stall near a CNG filling station in Merul Badda, he said he can no longer drive throughout the day as before because refuelling has become difficult.

"The little gas I manage to get runs out after one or two trips within Dhaka. Travelling outside the capital is out of the question. It has become very difficult to support my family," he said.

The situation is similar for thousands of CNG and app-based ride-share drivers across the capital, who are spending hours in queues at filling stations only to receive limited fuel because of low gas pressure. Many say the shortage has drastically reduced their daily trips and earnings.

During a visit to several CNG filling stations on Monday (July 27), long queues of CNG-run private cars and other vehicles were seen waiting for gas.

Driver Sanaullah said he usually needs Tk600 to Tk700 worth of gas each day, but is now able to refill only Tk150 to Tk200 worth.

"When the gas runs out midway, we are forced to stop on the road and remain worried throughout the day," he said.

He added that around 10,000 to 12,000 CNG and app-based ride-share drivers in Dhaka are facing similar difficulties, with many unable to operate their vehicles without adequate gas supplies.

The shortage has also affected commuters, as the number of CNG-run and app-based vehicles on the roads has fallen.

Abdullah Momen, a resident of Banasree, said he has struggled to book app-based rides over the past few days.

"Even after trying for hours, I often cannot find a car. When one is available, the fare is much higher than usual," he said.
