Satkhira AL leader ordered jail-gate interrogation

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered police to interrogate Md Nazrul Islam, general secretary of the Satkhira district Awami League, for one day at the jail gate in a murder case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Mohammad Jonayed passed the order after a hearing.

The case was filed over the death of Daffodil International University student Ramiz Uddin Ahmed Rupak during the July 2024 anti-discrimination student movement.

The Detective Branch arrested Nazrul from Dhaka’s Vatara area on July 27. Police had sought a seven-day remand, saying his interrogation was necessary to identify other accused and alleged instigators involved in the killing.

According to the case documents, 21-year-old Rupak was shot in the right eye near the Karwan Bazar metro rail station on August 24, 2024, while participating in the movement. He was later taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Rupak’s father filed the case with Tejgaon Police Station, naming former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 222 others as accused.
