Police on Wednesday intercepted a convoy of the National Citizen Party (NCP) in Moulvibazar's Srimangal as it was heading to Habiganj, where Section 144 had been imposed following violence surrounding the party's July March programme.
The convoy, carrying NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, Chief Organiser (Southern Region) Hasnat Abdullah and other central leaders, was stopped around 4:30 pm at the Cha Kanya Bhaskarya area on the Srimangal-Shayestaganj road.
Television footage showed Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah getting out of their vehicles and speaking with police officers after the convoy was halted.
According to locals, the convoy had left the Moulvibazar Circuit House at around 3:00 pm for Habiganj. Police later erected barricades on the Srimangal-Shayestaganj road.
