Goalando UNO praised for returning unspent government funds

Outgoing Rajbari, Goalando Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Sathi Das has earned widespread praise after returning surplus funds from two canal re-excavation projects to the government exchequer.
Sathi Das was known for her service in the upazila. Before leaving, she set a rare example of administrative accountability by returning unused public funds instead of claiming cost overruns.
Her actions have been applauded by local political leaders and residents alike.
According to the upazila Administration and the Project Implementation Officer (PIO) office, two separate canals were re-excavated under the government’s nationwide canal re-excavation initiative.
The canals cover the Habil Mondal Para and Goalando Nazir Uddin Government Pilot High School areas. A total of 2.61 kilometers of canal work was successfully completed over nearly three months.
The project office reported that Tk 48.75 lakh was initially allocated for the two canals. Through strict monitoring and financial management, the work was fully completed to standard, leaving a surplus of Tk nine lakh, which was immediately deposited into the state treasury.
Regarding project oversight, officials noted that Ali Newaz Mahmud Khaiyam, MP for Rajbari-1 and State Minister for Cultural Affairs, regularly monitored the project's progress.
In addition, Deputy Commissioner Afroza Parveen physically inspected the site to verify quality. Both expressed high satisfaction with the implementation.
Ujanchar Union project members Russel Mahmud and Faridur Rahman stated that the UNO personally supervised the work on-site. She maintained strict vigilance to prevent any irregularities or lack of transparency.
Ujanchar UP Chairman Md Goljar Hossain Mridha said the entire project was conducted with complete transparency. Fair wages were paid to day laborers, and all other expenses were cleared following proper procedures.
Speaking on the matter, Goalando UNO Sathi Das said, "Our main objective was to ensure 100 percent transparency, honesty, and accountability at every step. We finished the work while ensuring the proper use of every public coin. The remaining funds were deposited back into the state exchequer according to the rules."
Local officials and conscious citizens noted that maintaining such transparency in public development projects ensures quality while saving substantial public funds. They added that the initiative taken by the Goalandu Upazila Administration sets an exemplary benchmark for other government projects across the country.
