Gerhard returns to lead Bangladesh Hockey

Bangladesh's newly appointed national men's hockey team head coach, Peter Gerhard, arrived in Dhaka shortly after midnight on Friday, pledging to help the side unlock its true potential and steer it towards stronger performances on the international stage.

Officials of the Bangladesh Hockey Federation (BHF) welcomed the experienced German coach at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport before he prepared to begin work with the squad currently training for the upcoming Asian Games campaign. Speaking upon his arrival, Gerhard expressed confidence that the recent results did not truly reflect the team's quality.

"In my opinion, the team is much better than the results it achieved in the recent tournaments," he said. 

"We have to improve the current situation, and that is exactly what we are going to work on."

The veteran coach made it clear that there would be no shortcuts on the road to success, stressing that discipline and perseverance would be the cornerstones of his programme. "The players will have to go through a very tough period over the coming weeks. They will have to work extremely hard, but in the end they will enjoy the sweet rewards of that effort," Gerhard added, signalling his determination to build a fitter and more competitive side.

Reflecting on his long association with Bangladesh hockey, Gerhard also spoke warmly about the federation's new leadership. He said he had known BHF President Ariful Haque Prince for many years and noted that newly elected General Secretary Ishtiaq was the son of legendery hockey player Abdus Sadeq, expressing hope that both officials would play a positive role in taking the game forward.

Gerhard is no stranger to Bangladesh hockey, having served as the national team's head coach during previous spells. His return is expected to inject fresh momentum into the national programme as Bangladesh seeks to raise its standards and make a stronger impact in regional and continental competitions.
