One dead, three missing after boat capsizes in Sunamganj

One person died and three others went missing after a boat carrying 10 people capsized in Moiar Haor in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj while they were returning home from a kirtan programme early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Arun Debnath, son of late Anil Debnath of East Bhabanipur area under Jagannathpur municipality.

The missing are Hemendra Debnath, 30, son of late Jogindra Debnath; Satyendra Nath Sati, 65, son of late Subal Debnath; and Adhir Debnath, 35, son of late Anil Debnath. All are from East Bhabanipur.

According to police and locals, 10 members of the Hindu community from the area went by boat to a kirtan programme in neighbouring Bharaout around 8pm on Friday.

They were returning home around 3:30am when the boat capsized in the Baluchar area of Moiar Haor. Six passengers managed to swim to safety, while four went missing.

A police and Fire Service team later recovered Arun’s body. Three others remained missing when the report was filed.

Jagannathpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shafiqul Islam confirmed the incident and said one of the four missing passengers had been recovered dead.
