5 minors drown in four dists

Five children drowned in separate incidents in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola District, Sonargaon Upazila of Narayanganj District, Kaliganj Upazila of Gazipur District and Singra Upazila of Natore District in two days.

LALMOHAN, BHOLA: An 18-month-old child named Md Abu Sayed died after drowning in a beel in Munshir Hawla area of Ward No. 7 of Lalmohan Union in Lalmohan Upazila of the district on Saturday morning. The child was the son of Md Ibrahim of the area.

It is known that while playing in the morning, the child fell into the beel in front of the house without anyone's knowledge.

The family members started searching for him after not seeing him for a long time. At one stage, they found the child floating in the beel and took him to a local village doctor, who declared him dead.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lalmohan Police Station (PS0 Md Oliul Islam said that no complaint was received from the child's family in this incident.

SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ: A child named Ayan, 8, drowned in a pond in the Chilarbag area of Sonargaon Municipality on Friday morning. Besides, another child named Roja is undergoing treatment with serious injuries.

The deceased was the son of Jamal Hossain of Goperbag area of Sanmandi Union in Sonargaon Upazila. He had come to visit his maternal grandmother's house in Chilarbag. Ayan and Roja are maternal uncle and aunt.

According to local sources, three children named Ayan, Roja and Shanta went to bathe in a pond in the Chilarbag area at 11 am on Friday. After some time, Shanta returned home, but Ayan and Roja drowned. Later, the family members rescued them from the pond and provided them with first aid. They were first taken to the Sonargaon Upazila Health Complex but the doctor on duty there sent Ayan to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where he was declared dead.

KALIGANJ, GAZIPUR: Two children have drowned while bathing in the Shitalakkha River near the Charsindur Bridge in the Moktarpur area of Kaliganj Upazila of the district on Friday morning.

The deceased Labibul Al Hasan, 10, was the son of Md Ataur Sheikh of Ward No. 7 of Moktarpur Union, and Raihan Islam Rabbi, 12, was the son of Md Tofazzal Hossain of Darinasera Village in Kapasia Upazila of Gazipur. The two deceased were studying in a local madrasa.

According to local sources, five friends went to bathe together in the river in the morning. After a while, three returned to the bank, but Labib and Rabbi went missing. Local people started searching and recovered their bodies.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kaliganj PS Emdadul Haque said that the police recovered the bodies, and since there was no complaint, those were handed over to the relatives without autopsies based on the written request of the two families. In addition, two unnatural death cases were filed with the PS.

SINGRA, NATORE: A child drowned in a pond in the Sherkol Panchbaria area of Singra Upazila of the district on Thursday afternoon. 

The deceased Raihan Ali, 6, was the son of Islam Pramanik, a day labourer from Lalua Panchpakia Village in Dahia Union of the upazila.

According to the deceased’s family and locals, day labourer Islam Pramanik lived there with his wife and young child Raihan as a pond guard for Shaban Ali in Sherkol Panchbaria Village. 

When his parents were busy maintaining the pond on Thursday afternoon, child Raihan Ali drowned in the pond. 

Singra PS OC Rafiqul Islam confirmed the death.
