Spider-Man: Brand New Day shatters preview record, eyes historic debut

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has swung into the record books even before its official opening, earning an unprecedented $72 million from preview screenings, including Wednesday early-access shows. The figure sets a new all-time preview record, surpassing the previous mark of $60 million held by Avengers: Endgame.

The latest Marvel-Sony blockbuster, starring Tom Holland, is now expected to deliver one of the biggest opening weekends in box office history. Industry forecasts project a domestic debut between $260 million and $280 million, while some analysts believe the film could cross the $300 million mark. Sony, however, has issued a more cautious estimate of $190 million to $195 million, reports Verity. 

If projections hold, Brand New Day would become the second-biggest domestic opening ever, trailing only Avengers: Endgame, which debuted with $357 million in North America and $1.2 billion worldwide in 2019.

Only nine films have previously crossed the $200 million mark in their opening weekend, including Spider-Man: No Way Home, Avengers: Infinity War, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Deadpool & Wolverine, Jurassic World, The Avengers and Black Panther.

Overseas, Brand New Day is expected to collect $275 million to $300 million during its opening weekend, although analysts say the final total could exceed expectations. Holland’s previous Spider-Man outing, No Way Home, launched with $327 million internationally and $587 million globally, making it one of the strongest worldwide openings on record.

Set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the new film follows Peter Parker as he navigates life after the world has forgotten his identity as Spider-Man. Isolated from MJ, played by Zendaya, and his friend Ned, portrayed by Jacob Batalon, Peter must confront a mysterious new antagonist played by Sadie Sink.

The film arrives shortly after Holland and Zendaya shared the screen in this month’s blockbuster The Odyssey, adding further anticipation to what is already shaping up to be another record-breaking release.
