Dhaka road crashes kill 1,384 in 6 years: Study

Road crashes have killed 1,384 people in Dhaka over the past six and a half years, according to the Road Safety Foundation.

From 2020 through July 2026, the capital recorded 1,849 crashes that also injured 2,488 people, the foundation said on Saturday.

Among the dead were 1,034 men, 219 women and 131 children.

Pedestrians accounted for 592 deaths, motorcyclists 536, while 256 were drivers or passengers of buses, rickshaws, CNG-run autorickshaws and other vehicles.

Nighttime crashes claimed the most lives, with 519 deaths, or 37.5 percent of the total. Morning crashes accounted for 258 deaths, followed by afternoon 195, dawn 142, evening 96 and noon 174.

Trucks, covered vans, pickups, tankers and garbage trucks were involved in 33.25 percent of crashes, followed by motorcycles at 26 percent and buses at 21.75 percent.
