Bangladesh proposes importing gas from Myanmar through pipeline

Bangladesh has proposed importing natural gas from Myanmar through a pipeline as the two countries discussed exploring possibilities of LNG supply as well to meet Bangladesh’s growing energy demand.
The proposal was made by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud during a meeting with Myanmar Ambassador to Bangladesh H E U Kyaw Soe Moe at the Secretariat on Sunday morning.
During the meeting, the minister said Bangladesh is particularly interested in importing natural gas from Myanmar through a pipeline to address the country’s domestic gas shortage.
The Myanmar ambassador responded positively to the proposal and expressed interest in holding further discussions on the possibility of supplying gas in the form of LNG.
The energy minister also welcomed the LNG supply proposal and showed interest in reviving earlier discussions on constructing a gas pipeline from Myanmar to Chattogram.
To strengthen bilateral energy cooperation, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud proposed holding a ministerial-level meeting between the two countries and said Bangladesh would formally invite Myanmar’s Energy Minister to visit Dhaka. He also expressed his willingness to visit Myanmar if necessary.
Referring to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s recent visit to China, the minister said a proposal was raised during the visit to establish a China-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor. He said a gas pipeline between Bangladesh and Myanmar could play a supportive role in implementing the proposed corridor while expanding long-term trade and energy cooperation.
He also highlighted the government’s interest in strengthening relations with Myanmar under the “Neighbour First” policy.
The Myanmar ambassador said the issue could be reviewed at a meeting of the Bangladesh-Myanmar Joint Technical Committee.
Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Adviser Anindya Islam Amit, Energy Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam, and Power Secretary Mirana Mahruq were also present at the meeting.
