Jordan convenes emergency meeting over tensions at Al-Aqsa

Jordan has called an emergency meeting of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers amid rising tensions surrounding the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem, The Guardian reported.

The meeting, to be chaired by Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, will bring together members of the Arab League as well as Türkiye, Indonesia, Malaysia and Pakistan.

Jordan said it was increasingly concerned over recent visits by Israeli groups to the Al-Aqsa compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount, and warned that any change to the site’s longstanding status quo could trigger wider regional unrest.

According to the report, Jordan also expressed concern over plans to establish a special Israeli police unit at the site and fears tensions could escalate further during the Jewish Passover holiday in September.

Safadi warned that altering the current arrangements at the holy site or any attempt to displace Palestinians from the occupied West Bank would violate international law and risk destabilising the wider region.
