Teesta flows above danger level, low-lying areas inundated

The Teesta River was flowing 13 centimetres above the danger level at Dalia point in Nilphamari on Wednesday morning following continuous rainfall and upstream inflows, raising fears of flooding in nearby low-lying areas.

According to the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the river’s water level was recorded at 52.28 metres at the Dalia gauge station against the danger level of 52.15 metres.

Rising water has already inundated low-lying areas in parts of Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas, affecting several riverside unions.

Executive Engineer of the Dalia Water Development Board Amitabh Chowdhury said the river had remained above the danger level since early Wednesday, although the water level was expected to start receding later in the day.

Local authorities and the Water Development Board are closely monitoring the flood situation.
